Vitamin C: Primary Water-Soluble Antioxidant
Vitamin C is an important water-soluble antioxidant nutrient and is involved in a wide variety of biochemical reactions throughout the body. Included in its functions is the synthesis of collagen, the basis of connective tissue, found in virtually every cell of the body.* Because of its molecular structure, vitamin C is able to donate hydrogen atoms from two hydroxyl positions to neutralize free radicals. The body uses vitamin C during white blood cell production, histamine release and degradation, the reduction of glutathione, and the metabolism and protection of several other nutrients.* In combination with other nutrients, vitamin C also supports the production of certain neurotransmitters.*
Cassava Root Source - Currently out-of-stock. Please see the Vitamin C Cassava Source Update for more information.
The latest addition to our Vitamin C line is a unique cassava root (of the potato family) source vitamin C, available in both powder and capsules. Cassava, or Manihot esculenta, is a bushy South American shrub with long tuberous roots, which are traditionally eaten like potatoes. Cassava root starch serves as the starting material for a multi-step process of manufacturing ascorbic acid. Although the elaborate process has one step that involves the use of corn-derived alcohol, this formula is generally well tolerated by corn allergic individuals.
ARG: Buffered Vitamin C Pioneer
Stephen Levine, Ph.D. and Allergy Research Group® pioneered the development of buffered vitamin C products, and continues to offer the purest and least allergenic vitamin C products available. In addition to their significant content of ascorbic acid, both our corn and cassava root source Buffered Vitamin C supply the macrominerals calcium, magnesium and potassium, giving an acid-alkaline buffering action (pH 7.0 in water), potentially improving bowel tolerance.* The calcium and magnesium content is approximately one half the RDI per heaping teaspoon, which may make it desirable for individuals who do not regularly consume dairy products.*
